Norton DIsney
JUNE 2024
In Lincolnshire, at the heart of RAF country, we were delighted to be partnered with the internationally renowned Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, a community archaeological project, which offered spaces for all serving personnel and their families on their summer dig in Jun 24.
The project was open to all Service personnel and Service leavers within 1 year of exit and their immediate dependents (over 18), this opportunity as all our projects aim to be was free. 2 Service personnel spent a week on this exciting project learning about archaeology and Lincolnshire history, I even extended his time and stayed for 2 weeks. They have now joined Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group as a member.
The site gained international recognition in 2023 when a unique metal dodecahedron was found on the site, associated with a Roman context this artefact is very exciting and has challenged many professionals to understand its use and how it came to be in Norton Disney. This year’s dig didn’t locate such a significant single find but was just as exciting as the team sought to understand the contect in which the dodecahedron was found, it appears the sit has an indsutrial purpose but domestic pottery was also found suggesting a later satge where the site was used as a possible site to dispose of domestic waste. The participants loved the event and it has led to a strong partnership with Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, with us being invitred to the Time Team event later in 2024, it is hoped that there will be spaces on this dig in upcoming years.
